On Arrival
You will be greeted by a member of the AOMS team at reception who will confirm your details and ensure all appropriate paperwork is completed along with processing any payment for your surgery or health fund excess.
A member of the Nursing team will complete your admission. Your vital signs will be checked and your medical history will be confirmed. The Nurse will confirm your weight/ any medication you are taking, allergies, cognitive and blood clot risks. This is all necessary to ensure that we are giving you the best care for your hospital journey.
Once the Nursing admission is complete you will be asked to wait in our waiting room until it is time for your procedure. If you need anything in this time please chat with the reception desk.
Antibiotics
Before a surgical procedure, antibiotics may be given to you to reduce the risk of getting an infection. Any antibiotics provided will be based on current therapeutic guidelines and specialist advice.
If you are prescribed antibiotics, the Doctor should discuss which medicine is best for you after considering any allergies or other health conditions you may have. If you are concerned about taking antibiotics, please let your doctor know as they may be able to give you more information to allay those concerns.
The Procedure
If you are undergoing IV Sedation, you will meet with the Anaesthetist, allowing you the opportunity to discuss any concerns and ask any questions you may have. It is important that you openly discuss everything that is relevant to your care. Your Anaesthetist will monitor you during and after surgery to ensure a smooth recovery.
You will also have an opportunity to speak with your surgeon to confirm your procedure and ask any questions.
Our team will take you into the operation room, and you will be asked to confirm your identity and the procedure you are having once again. We do this a lot! Whilst it may seem that way, correct patient identification is vital for your safety, which we take very seriously. There will be at least 4 members of staff who will be in the room preparing for your procedure. Please ensure that if you do not feel comfortable in the chair speak to one of the team who will do their best to make you comfortable.
Once you are comfortable, the Anaesthetist will place a cannula in your hand to give you the medication you require.
Recovery
After the procedure you will be assisted into recovery where the nurse will keep a close eye on you by checking your observations, your wounds and ensuring that you are kept as comfortable as possible. You will be kept in recovery for at least half an hour. We will contact your carer to let them know when you will be ready to go home.
At discharge the Nurse will provide you and your carer written and verbal details regarding post operative care instructions, a follow up appointment and any prescriptions that will need to be filled at your local pharmacy.
Additionally, we will complete a discharge summary for you to take home and if you have consented, it will be uploaded to the My Health Record.
If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us on the afterhours number provided.
