After Surgery Care
AOMS Discharge Policy
Patients must be accompanied home with a responsible adult who will stay with you for the 24 hours post your surgery for your safety.
Rest at home for the remainder of the day following your procedure. Be aware that you may be at greater risk of falling due to the effects of the anaesthetic.
You will be provided with a discharge pack on the day with all the information you will require for your care at home. This may include a prescription that will need to be filled at your local pharmacy. Please note, AOMS does not have a Pharmacy on site.
Post Surgery
After the procedure you will be assisted into recovery where the nurse will keep a close eye on you by checking your observations, your wounds and ensuring that you are kept as comfortable as possible. You will be kept in recovery for at least half an hour. We will contact your carer to let them know when you will be ready to go home.
At discharge the Nurse will provide you and your carer written and verbal details regarding post operative care instructions, a follow up appointment and any prescriptions that will need to be filled at your local pharmacy. You will then be handed over to your carer to take you home.
If you are having sedation for your procedure, you must have a responsible adult accompany you home and stay with you for the 24 hours following your procedure.
Things to Avoid
It is important to note that the anaesthetic drugs given to you throughout your surgery will be acting in your body for the next 24 hours and these may make you feel
a bit sleepy and forgetful. These effects slowly wear off, but it is important that for the next 24 hours you:
Do not drive a car (not even to the local shops)
Do not travel alone by public transport
Do not operate heavy machinery
Do not drink alcohol
Avoid a heavy meal
Do not make any legal decisions, sign any legal documents or conduct business
Do not engage in sports, exercise, heavy work or heavy lifting
